Second Life Founder Launches Coffee & Power, A Jeff Bezos-Backed Marketplace For Skill-Based Jobs

Coffee & PowerPhilip Rosedale, the founder of Second Life and Linden Lab, is debuting his new venture today? Coffee & Power, a marketplace for skill-based jobs. The San Francisco-based startup has raised $1 million in funding from Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, Greylock Partners, Mitch Kapor, Catamount Ventures and Kevin Rose. Rosedale explained to me that the idea behind Coffee & Power came from the connections made within virtual world Second Life. What made Second Life attractive to users, he explains, is that people are able to create value from each other and use skills and capabilities in novel ways in the virtual world. Rosedale wanted to translate this to real life. The company?s technology was also developed leveraging its Worklist technology, which allows software developers to contribute and receive payment for small chunks of code.

(AP) ? Utility crews have been slower to fix Northeast power outages caused by last weekend's record-setting snowstorm than they were after Hurricane Irene and its remnants because they had less time to prepare, a U.S. Department of Energy official said Tuesday.

Bill Bryan, a deputy assistant secretary for the agency, said during a stop in hard-hit Connecticut that he was monitoring the mutual aid response that has sent thousands of extra workers into the region.

The freak October snowstorm knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses from Maryland to Maine. About 1.6 million customers remained without power Tuesday.

Bryan says utility companies didn't have time to get additional workers from other regions in place before the snowstorm like they were able to do before Irene in August. The companies had several days to prepare for Irene and only a few days to prepare for the snowstorm, which hit the region harder than was forecast. At midweek last week, some forecasters said the storm was going to miss New England.

Thousands of extra crews from across the country are now helping to restore power in the Northeast, where some utility customers aren't expected to get their electricity back until next week.

"When you know you've got a hurricane coming, part of the mutual assistance package is to pre-stage crews," Bryan said. "So after the hurricane has come and gone, you already have crews on the outskirts ready to come in and start working. ... This storm hit, and these crews were not mobilized."

Six thousand extra utility crews were either working in the Northeast on Tuesday or getting close to arriving, officials said.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who asked the Department of Energy for help in coordinating the cleanup and power restoration response, said Tuesday that he was disappointed that the number of out-of-state crews helping in the state was lower than expected. A spokeswoman for the governor said he wasn't criticizing the utilities' response, just trying to do everything he could to get the power on quicker.

About 700 extra workers on Tuesday were helping the 200 regular crews of Connecticut Light & Power Co., the state's largest utility, which had requested 1,000 additional crews. The weekend storm caused more than 830,000 outages in the state ? a record ? and about 650,000 customers remained in the dark Tuesday.

Bryan said it appeared there were problems in the way extra workers were being distributed in the region.

"If you look at the outages in Connecticut, which basically equal the outages of all the other places combined, you really don't have yet a fair distribution of workers, mutual assistance teams out here doing this," Bryan said.

The storm on Saturday and Sunday dropped snowfall totals ranging from less than an inch in some places to 32 inches in the small town of Peru, Mass., in the Berkshire Mountains. The wet, heavy snow snapped branches and toppled trees and brought down an extensive network of wiring, including sturdy, long-distance transmission lines and wires supplying individual homes, making repairs difficult.

Authorities blamed the storm for at least 25 deaths, including one in Canada. Most were caused by falling trees, traffic accidents or electrocutions from downed wires. There also were reports of people suffering carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly ventilated generators.

The outages forced schools across the Northeast to remain closed Tuesday. People continued lining up for fuel for their cars and generators as many gas stations remained without power. Shelters were busy as people without heat in their homes sought refuge from cold temperatures.

Jim Ponte and his girlfriend have been staying at a shelter at a community center in Rocky Hill, about 10 miles south of Hartford, since they lost power on Saturday. They have been going home at night to leave the roughly 90 cots in a gym for the elderly.

"We stay here as late as we can, then we go home and put on 10 layers of clothing," the 28-year-old custodian said. "I'll be out picking up a generator as soon as this is all over."

Rocky Hill Mayor Tony LaRosa and his family stayed at the shelter Monday night before going home and climbing under quilts. Besides the people on cots in the gym, he said people have been sleeping in cots in the hallway of town hall and in sleeping bags on chairs in the town council chambers.

"This is much, much worse than anything we've seen," LaRosa said. "I'm thankful it happened now instead of the middle of January. I don't know where we'd put everybody."

Daytime temperatures reached the 50s ? unusually mild for the days after a wintry storm ? but overnight temperatures dipped into the 30s and below over much of the region.

In Massachusetts, about 1,900 people spent Monday night at 76 shelters around the state, emergency management officials said. The largest numbers were reported in the western part of the state including Springfield Central High School, where 429 stayed overnight.

Outside the school, Susie Nguyen was getting some fresh air with her brother. She said she spent about a week in a Red Cross evacuation center after a tornado struck the area in June.

"This is the second time this year," she said. "I don't want anything else to happen. I want it quiet from now on."

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch said about 260 people stayed at shelters across the state Monday night.

Apple buys 3-D modeling company C3 Technologies, could overhaul Maps app (Appolicious)

Rumors have hit the Internet that Apple has purchased C3 Technologies, a Saab spin-off company whose 3-D mapping technology could drastically change the way we use GPS with iOS devices.

The story is being reported by 9to5Mac, which says that Apple has acquired the company to add to two others it has working for its mapping apps: Poly9, a 3-D mapping company, and mapping software developer Placebase. C3 creates some pretty intense, highly-detailed and realistic-looking 3-D renderings of real locations based on map data.

According to 9to5Mac, C3 was reportedly bought in 2009, but it wasn?t clear who the buyer was. Now the site is reporting that Apple was, in fact, the buyer, and that most of the C3 team has been kept on-board and is working together in Sweden. That?s where C3 was located before it was acquired by Apple, although now the division is reportedly known as ?Sputnik.?

C3?s technology apparently requires almost no human input, but still uses cameras to capture information about a physical location and create high-quality 3-D renderings of various spaces. 9to5Mac has some pretty mind-blowing images from C3 in its story, and it?s easy to see how Apple could make some really great use out of the technology.

Apple doesn?t often gobble up smaller companies, so when it does, there?s usually a purpose in sight. A notable example is Siri: Apple obtained the company responsible for the voice-activated personal assistant software, then rolled it into iOS. Currently Siri is only available with the iPhone 4S, but you can bet that probably by next summer when the iPhone 5 is expected, you?ll be able to use Siri on more iOS devices.

The success of Siri suggests that C3?s mapping technology could be put to some pretty great uses in Apple?s platform. It would make sense if Apple is looking to move away from Google Maps and create its own mapping solution, which would make sense given that the two companies are at war over smartphone supremacy. With Apple?s A5 chip embedded in the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S, its devices could likely provide the power C3?s maps will need, and they could pretty well revamp one of the iPhone?s most useful features.

It?ll likely be a while before we start to see real development on C3?s tech in iOS, though (if the report actually proves to be true, that is). But given how big a deal Siri is, and how it might even be driving the sales of the iPhone 4S, it?s a fair bet that another great innovation in easy to use technology like C3 seems to be able to offer could have a big impact on iOS as well.

Belgian court's adviser says Tintin book not racist (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? A Belgian judicial adviser has recommended the country's courts reject a legal bid to have a book featuring fictional boy hero Tintin banned for racism, court documents showed.

Valery de Theux de Meylandt, a Belgian Procureur du Roi whose opinion is requested and typically followed by the court, advised judges in a written statement to rule against campaigner Bienvenu Mbutu Mondondo's application to have "Tintin in the Congo" banned for racism.

De Theux de Meylandt said in the document dated Friday and seen by Reuters that Tintin author Georges Remi (better known as Herge) did not intend to incite racial hatred when he depicted his cartoon hero on an adventure in the former Belgian colony in a 1931 work that was updated in 1946.

"The representations (of African people) by Herge are a reflection of his time," de Theux de Meylandt wrote.

Intention is a key criteria in substantiating a charge of racism. The court is expected to deliver a judgement early next year rejecting or accepting Mondondo's argument that the book's depiction of Africans is racist.

"We see in particular that Tintin in the Congo does not put Tintin in a situation where there is competition or confrontation between the young reporter and any black or group of blacks, but pits Tintin against a group of gangsters ... who are white," de Theux de Meylandt also wrote in the statement.

Tintin in the Congo was one of a series of comic books about the adventures of a boy journalist and his dog Snowy, which were first published in 1931. Mondondo has taken aim at the modern version of the updated 1946 book.

The court case comes at a time when Tintin's popularity is on a comeback with a new Hollywood film from director Stephen Spielberg about the intrepid Belgian boy journalist on an adventure alongside Snowy, Captain Haddock and Inspector Thompson.

(AP) ? Matt Cassel connected with Jonathan Baldwin for a 39-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter, giving the Kansas City Chiefs a 10-0 lead over the San Diego Chargers.

Cassel was 5 of 8 for 106 yards in the opening quarter.

He hit Baldwin for 17 yards to convert a long third down on the Chiefs' first drive, and Dwayne Bowe for 26 more on another third-and-long to set up Ryan Succop's 36-yard field goal.

Philip Rivers threw his second interception of the quarter on the Chargers' ensuing drive, turning the momentum back to the Chiefs. Cassel hit fullback Le'Ron McClain for 16 yards, and a personal foul penalty for hitting a defenseless receiver on San Diego moved the ball to the Chargers 39.

Cassel dropped back to pass and saw Baldwin streaking for the end zone. The rookie wide receiver out-jumped fellow rookie Marcus Gilchrist and hauled in his first career touchdown catch.

Rivers continued his early season struggles in the first quarter.

The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback was intercepted by Kendrick Lewis on the first play of San Diego's second possession. His second pick was tipped by defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry and dropped into the hands of Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson.

Rivers also threw two fourth-quarter interceptions last week against New York, when the Jets rallied with 17 straight points to stun the AFC West-leading Chargers 27-21. He has thrown seven touchdown passes and 11 interceptions so far this season.

The Chiefs (3-3), who have won three straight after an abysmal start, can move into a tie for first in the division with San Diego (4-2) and the idle Oakland Raiders with a victory before a raucous crowd on Halloween night. They would be the first team in NFL history to lose their first three games and be tied or leading a division after seven games.

Barclays profit up, investment bank pain continues (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Barclays Plc's (BARC.L) underlying quarterly profit rose 5 percent from a year ago as lower charges for bad debt at the British bank offset a third consecutive sharp fall in investment banking revenue.

Barclays said on Monday capital markets had remained difficult in October as the euro zone's financial problems deepened, but had shown some improvement since last week's announcement of plans to solve the crisis.

Pretax profit in the third quarter through September reached 2.4 billion pounds ($3.9 billion). Stripping out a gain on the value of its own debt and other one-off items, profit was 1.34 billion pounds, up 5 percent on the 2010 period.

Analysts said a slackening in its investment bank had been taken up by improvement in other areas, notably UK retail banking and the BarclayCard credit card arm.

"It does look as if all their businesses are making a contribution, which is always a decent sign," said Cavendish Asset Management fund manager Paul Mumford, whose firm owns around 1 million Barclays shares.

Top-line income at Barclays Capital, the investment bank that provides the bulk of the bank's profit, fell to 2.25 billion pounds, down 22 percent from the second quarter to be in line with the consensus forecast as capital markets activity was

hit hard across the industry.

Revenue in fixed income, currencies and commodities (FICC) dropped 16 percent from the second quarter, equities income slumped 40 percent and advisory income was down by a quarter.

Barclays' investment in U.S. money manager BlackRock (BLK.N) was marked down by 1.8 billion pounds, which it said had already been recognized in equity and regulatory capital.

Barclays said its underlying profit for the first nine months of this year was a shade over 5 billion pounds, up 18 percent from a year earlier.

Chief Executive Bob Diamond said this showed momentum "despite significant economic and market headwinds" and said the bank had "rock solid" capital, funding and liquidity. It does not intend to raise new equity capital, he said.

Losses on bad debts were 1 billion pounds in the third quarter, down 16 percent from a year ago, and have tumbled by a third so far this year.

GDF Suez looks to China fund to expand Asia access (AP)

BEIJING ? French power and gas company GDF Suez wants its new alliance with China's sovereign wealth fund to bring in Chinese partners to help develop global energy projects and expand its Asian presence, the company's chairman said Monday.

China Investment Corp. agreed in August to invest 3.3 billion euros ($4 billion) in GDF Suez's gas exploration unit and a gas facility in the Caribbean. The companies pledged to look for more joint investment opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

The deal, the first of its kind for CIC, reflects a growing trend for Chinese investors to expand abroad by taking minority stakes in established companies. The Chinese investors gain access to experience and technology while reducing the risk of political friction by limiting their ownership. The Western partners get increased access to China's fast-growing market and its pool of investment capital.

Paris-based GDF Suez wants the partnership to help drive its expansion in Asia's fast-growing energy markets, said company chairman and CEO Gerard Mestrallet. The company is developing gas fields in Australia and Indonesia, and Mestrallet said it wants to expand in gas supply, water treatment and other utility businesses in China.

"CIC can give better access to some Chinese financial partners," Mestrallet said at a news conference.

"It can also open doors for us with a large variety of Chinese potential partners" in power generation and other businesses, he said. "And CIC could help GDF Suez to find Chinese partners to participate jointly in projects in Southeast Asia and Africa, or eventually in Latin America."

CIC was created in 2007 to invest a portion of Beijing's $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves. Its leaders have said their investments abroad will be mostly small shareholdings in companies and other minority investments to reduce the risk of arousing political tensions.

CIC agreed in August to invest 2.3 billion euros ($3.2 billion) in GDF Suez's gas exploration unit in exchange for a 30 percent stake and to pay 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) for 10 percent of the LNG Atlantic liquefaction plant in Trinidad and Tobago.

GDF Suez is one of the world's biggest gas and power companies, with 85 billion euros ($119 billion) in revenue last year. Its activities include gas production and supply, power generation and water treatment in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

In China, GDF Suez supplies gas to power companies and has 26 joint ventures to treat or distribute water, including in the major cities of Chongqing and Shanghai.

Mestrallet was in Beijing to sign the final agreement on CIC's investment. He said the two sides are creating a joint board to look for more investment opportunities.

He said CIC already has helped to arrange a possible line of credit for GDF Suez from China's biggest state-owned commercial lender, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd.

Also in China, GDF Suez has an agreement with state-owned energy company CNOOC Ltd. to cooperate on developing new projects.

The French company is providing CNOOC with a ship that can store and regasify liquefied natural gas to supply coastal areas that lack gas terminals. GDF Suez's executive vice president, Jean-Marie Dauger, said the gas vessel is valued at about $250 million but declined to give other financial details.

Other Western companies also are forging links with Chinese partners to expand access to the world's second-largest economy and investment, including cash-rich state banks that avoided the credit problems that battered Western institutions.

General Motors Co. announced a venture in 2009 to expand in India with China's Shanghai Automotive Industries Corp., which committed to invest $350 million. The companies said they might also team up to sell vehicles in Southeast Asia.

In June, Chinese conglomerate Fosun acquired 7.1 percent of French resort operator Club Med. The deal gives Club Med an experienced Chinese partner as it expands in China's booming tourism market.

GDF Suez also might look for Chinese partners to invest in power generation projects in other countries, Mastrallet said. He said there are no plans to get involved in generation in China, where government regulations do not permit independent power companies.
