Autism, Older Parents and Sperm Donation | Suite101.com

The Biological Clock Ticks for Men Too - Ivan Prole
The Biological Clock Ticks for Men Too - Ivan Prole

Aging sperm and eggs may cause miscarriages, fetal deaths and genetic disabilities and may predispose certain children to develop autism.

In 2007, doctors at Kaiser Permanente hospital in California published the results of a study they had conducted into autistic spectrum disorders. They found that the older a parent was, the higher the risk that their child would be diagnosed with autism. The risk was increased for children of parents who were 34 years or older and for every decade of increasing age.

133,114 children were enrolled in the study and of these, 593 had an autistic spectrum disorder, either autism, asperger?s syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).

The authors wrote:

?The reported prevalence of ASDs has increased significantly during the past few decades, in this same period, the mean age at maternity and paternity has also increased.?

Although it has been known for years that the older a woman is when she conceives the more chance her baby will have disabilities, men were thought to be immune from this same problem. It was thought that men could happily father a child at the age of 70 with no adverse effects to that child.

Now it has been shown that old sperm can cause miscarriages, fetal death and even childhood cancers and auto-immune disorders. This may be a problem for couples embarking on IVF, who are often older because they have been trying to have a baby for several years.

Could Having Older Parents Make A Baby More Susceptible to the Environment?

Perhaps being conceived with older sperm and egg could make a baby genetically susceptible to the environmental toxins around him? Environmental pollution, pesticides, allergies and propensity to adverse reactions to medications could theoretically be a consequence of having poorer quality genes.

Vaccines, Well-Baby Visits and Higher Risk of ASD

The authors wrote:

?Since preliminary analyses showed that the mean number of vaccinations in the first 6 months of life and the mean number of well-child care visits in the second year of life were significantly higher for children with older parents and children with ASDs, we were concerned that differential health care?seeking behavior might confound our results. Thus, these variables were also included as covariates in multivariable models.?

The increase in autism could be because more older parents in the group studied took their babies to well baby checks and gave them more vaccinations than younger parents. It could be a vaccine component causing neurological decline or a combination of that and genes. If old sperm is capable of causing fetal death, maybe old sperm could create a defective immune system that cannot cope with the challenge of being vaccinated?

Autism in Children Linked to Sperm Donor

The theory that some cases of autism may be linked to sperm was strengthened when single woman, Gwenyth Jackaway decided she would like to become a mother and went to a sperm donation clinic. She chose donor X. Her son, Dylan was diagnosed with a type of high functioning autism when he was two years old. At five years old, he could play the piano and knew the Fibonacci sequence but he had difficulties with socialising and had unusual behavior like hand-flapping and toe walking.

Gwenyth discovered, through the website Donor Sibling Registry, that donor X had created six families. Three of the children were diagnosed with autism and one showed signs of autism, leading the women to believe that something about donor X?s sperm was causing the autism.

Many experts believe that autism is genetic but needs an environmental trigger to set it off.

?It's a combination of being genetically vulnerable and then having some kind of social or toxicant exposure that tips you over," said Dr. Gary Goldstein at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

This raises the question of whether older parents undergoing IVF should opt for younger eggs and sperm as a matter of routine? Should parents who wish to delay parenting to the 30?s bank their eggs and sperm?

A genetic test has been formulated that looks at variations on the X chromosome that may be responsible for some cases of autism, particularly after IVF, but 90% of cases of autism have no known genetic cause, making testing difficult. Perhaps the answer in addition to using younger germ cells, is to test all babies for mitochondrial dysfunction that might predispose them to the environmental triggers that cause autism?

Colo. boy, 13, pleads guilty to killing parents (AP)

BURLINGTON, Colo. ? A 13-year-old boy who prosecutors say was playing with toy trucks and planes right before he shot and killed his parents was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in juvenile detention after pleading guilty to murder.

The boy was 12 in March when prosecutors say he shot Marilyn and Charles Long with a .357 Magnum revolver in Burlington, a small farming community about 140 miles east of Denver. He also pleaded guilty to attempt to commit first-degree murder and three counts of assault for attacking two of his younger siblings.

He could have faced decades in prison if he had been tried and convicted an adult.

The light sentence angered some relatives, but District Attorney Bob Watson said state law forced him to choose between what he saw as an unacceptably light juvenile sentence and an unnecessarily harsh lifetime sentence.

Watson told a judge there was no explanation for the slayings. He showed photographs of the family's backyard, where he said the boy had been playing with toy trucks and planes minutes before the shootings. He said tests showed that he was immature and noted that money he earned cleaning a church and the courthouse before the slayings had been spent on Legos.

"If you're looking for an adult explanation for why this kid went from playing in dirt to commit murder you'll never get one. This lies in the mind of a very immature 12-year-old," Watson said, referring to the boy's age at the time of the slayings.

The prosecutor said he was also concerned that a judge might have rejected a proposal to transfer the case to adult court and whether the state would be able to get a conviction there, noting that juries like to know why a crime was committed.

Charles Long's brother, Wally Long, said he was never in favor of a plea agreement.

"My desire for a longer sentence was never about hatred or anger but out of a sense of justice," he said.

The boy will also have to serve three years on parole after being released.

Marilyn Long, 50, homeschooled her kids and ran the children's ministry at the Evangelical Free Church. Charles Long, 51, served as an elder at another church and was a snack delivery driver. The boy was a greeter at the church and helped other children memorize Bible verses.

Prosecutors allege the boy stabbed and shot his 9-year-old brother and injured his 5-year-old sister with a knife. Both recovered from their wounds.

In court, the boy stood about 5 feet tall and appeared slight in his teal prison uniform. He declined a chance to speak and cried as a defense lawyer read a statement from his maternal grandmother, Dolores Richardson.

She noted that he was a helpful boy and hinted that the slayings had resulted from "helplessness, a cry for help for a situation, that (he) felt he had no control over."

After the hearing, Wally Long and the boy's 25-year-old brother said they didn't know to what she was referring. "He's dead to me," the brother said.

Before the sentencing, public defender Tom Ward said in court that the boy had made progress while in juvenile detention. He grew two inches, gained 16 pounds, and formed relationships with attorneys, staff and other juveniles, Ward said.

Ward also said the boy has shown "incredible remorse" for the crimes.

"Life in prison is not the proper place for a 12-year-old boy, especially this one," he added.

Legal Shield Review i.e Pre Paid Legal Services - MLM Company ...

Legal Shield, pretty cool new name .? So I decided that the next feature for??MLM Company Reviews should be a Legal Shield Review.? If you?re not familiar with Legal Shield, this review will give you a understanding of Pre-Paid Legal Services, now know as Legal Shield and what it?s?nearly 4 decade long history means for you.? Now before we begin it?s important I state that I am no longer a distributor for Pre Paid Legal Services, now Legal Shield.? However because of my involvement I have a unique perspective, which allows me to give an even better review.? So lets get started first with the products, then with you and where?fit in right now with the company.

Legal Shield was started back in 1972 under the name Pre-Paid Legal Services.? The company products consist of its various legal membership plans , for personal and commercial use. In additional a identity theft?plan which monitors your credit?through Kroll Inc. The legal plans are a low cost option?compared to?what it would cost for legal expenses?when that time comes for you to need an attorney?s help.? Basicially?it is?legal insurance.?

So here?s the real question.?Do you need to have a legal shield membership?? Well that depends who you are and what you intention is.? If you are rich or poor.? Then no, not really.? If you are in the middle like every one else it can be a value resource for most of the day to day stuff, that we all could use an expert opinion on.

Now is Legal Shield the right business for you?

Starting you own business is tough work, for 99.9% of people will not?join and start making ton?s of money.? If you?re considering joining Legal Shield I?definitely suggest you keep reading this legal shield review, it could make all the difference in your business.? Here are a few things you need to consider.

1.?Legal Shield has?all ready been in business for 40 years - That means if your goal is to be at the top of the company, its not likely to happen,?so you may be too late.??However this doesn?t mean you still can?t make a large enough income for it to be worth it.? Heck, most people would be cool with 10-15k a month income.

2. How will you bring in new reps and costumers- Everyone starts with there warm market i.e friends and family in this industry.? After this, it?s important that you have a method to bring in new people on a consistent basis if you plan to have success.? If your going to be successful in this industry you got to learn to expose a massive amount of people to your business opportunity. Enrolling new recruits and costumers is the name of the game.

So to cap off this Legal Shield Review, let me say that I think Legal Shield is a phenomenal company.?? Ultimately I think if you do purchase the product you will like what you get.? As far as joining the business, there is still plenty of opportunity left with Legal Shield.

Joining the MLM Industry

Understanding that you have a great opportunity is not enough.? You have to keep in mind that you make money by enrolling new customer and distributors.? Most people in the industry start will there friends and family, which is prefect.???However for?long term success, you will need a step by step system to?bring?new?customers and new?reps and customers consistently.? If done effectively, you can even make money from those who don?t join your business or buy your opportunities product.? Marketing systems such as My Lead System Pro provide knowledge and resources that give you that chance.

Songwriter, gospel singer Jessy Dixon dies at 73

Jessy Dixon, a singer and songwriter who introduced his energetic style of gospel music to wider audiences by serving as pop singer Paul Simon's opening act, died Monday. He was 73.

Miriam Dixon said her brother died Monday morning at his Chicago home. She said he had been sick but declined to provide additional details.

During a more than 50-year career, Dixon wrote songs for several popular singers, including jazz and rhythm and blues singer Randy Crawford. He later wrote songs performed by Cher, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole and Amy Grant.

But it was for his gospel singing ? religious music that combined the rhythmic beat of blues, jazz and soul ? that Dixon first gained attention. It was during an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1972 with his Jessy Dixon Singers that Dixon first came to Simon's attention. For the next eight years, Dixon toured with the pop icon, collaborating on Simon's 'Live Rhymin' Simon' and 'Still Crazy' albums.

Dixon also played keyboard with Earth Wind and Fire and guitarist Phillip Upchurch.

Miriam Dixon said her brother

Dixon, who began studying music at age 5, aspired to be classical pianist but told The Associated Press in a 1997 interview that he always knew his talent was destined for use in the church.

Born March 12, 1938, in San Antonio, Dixon's professional compass was set by gospel music legend James Cleveland, who heard Dixon's teen group perform at a theatre in the south Texas city. Dixon said Cleveland liked the group, but he liked Dixon more and persuaded him to move to Chicago to join his group, the Gospel Chimes, as both a singer and pianist.

Chicago's South Side was the place to be for a gospel musician, especially in the early 1960s.

"Going to church was like going to school," Dixon said. At church, he heard the likes of Mahalia Jackson and blues pioneer Thomas A. Dorsey, who is credited with creating modern gospel singing.

"Reading his (Dorsey's) music and studying it, he was the one who wrote for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Elvis Presley and Pat Boone," Dixon said. "All these people were singing his music and were making it commercial."

Dixon credited the creativity of artists like percussionist Maurice White and blues singer Willie Dixon, no relation, inspired him to compose. He started with choral music for Chicago's Thompson Community Singers, for which he sat at the keyboards. Several of his early songs have become classics, sung in churches across America, including: "Sit At His Feet and be Blessed," "These Old Heavy Burdens" and "I Love to Praise His Name."

His more recent compositions gained him even wider acceptance. Dixon's "I Am Redeemed," released in 1993, lingered on Billboard magazine's gospel chart for more than five years.

After his stint with Simon ended, Dixon rode a wave of increased gospel music interest during the 1980s to build a following in Europe.

During his 1997 interview, Dixon noted that when he first began touring on his own outside the United States in the 1980s, the small audiences didn't have much respect for gospel as religious expression.

"At first it was viewed as entertainment," he said. "But now when I go, they ask me to share my faith as a Christian."

In the United States, Dixon was a long-time fixture on composer and singer Bill Gaither's Gospel Series, video concert broadcast on religious oriented cable television stations.

During his career, Dixon was able to produce five gold records and garner several Grammy nominations.

Dixon, is survived by a brother and sister.

UBS CEO quits, board wants faster restructuring (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? Swiss bank UBS's Chief Executive Oswald Gruebel resigned on Saturday, shouldering the blame after its scandal-hit investment banking business lost $2.3 billion in alleged rogue trading.

Changes that will see that part of the bank's operations adopt a less risky business model would be pushed through faster, its chairman said, and Europe, Middle East and Africa head Sergio Ermotti would replace Gruebel on an interim basis.

"Oswald Gruebel feels that it is his duty to assume responsibility for the recent unauthorized trading incident. It is testimony to his uncompromising principles and integrity," Chairman Kaspar Villiger said in a statement.

Gruebel, a 67-year-old former trader who helped turn around Credit Suisse a decade ago, was brought out of retirement in 2009 to try to revamp UBS after it almost collapsed in 2008 under the weight of more than $50 billion lost on toxic assets.

Ermotti, a 51 year-old from Switzerland's Italian-speaking region of Ticino, was already being groomed as a possible successor since he joined UBS in April from UniCredit after he was passed over in a management reshuffle at the Italian bank following the departure of CEO Alessandro Profumo.

The board statement made no mention of the fate of investment bank boss Carsten Kengeter, whose future had also hung in the balance over the trading loss in his division.

The UBS board, which continued a meeting by telephone conference on Saturday that had started in Singapore this week, said it was "deeply disappointed" by the trading scandal.

"It will fully support the independent investigation and will ensure that mitigating measures are implemented to prevent such an incident from recurring," it said.

UBS trader Kweku Adoboli was "sorry beyond words for what had happened" and was "appalled at the scale of the consequences of his disastrous miscalculations," his lawyer Patrick Gibb said at a court hearing in London on Thursday.

The 31-year old did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody until a further hearing next month.

LESS RISKY INVESTMENT BANK

The board reconfirmed the bank's "integrated" strategy, combining wealth management, investment bank, asset management and Swiss retail and corporate businesses, but said it wanted to speed up a restructuring of investment banking.

The board said it had asked management to accelerate the implementation of a client-centric strategy for the investment bank "concentrating on advisory, capital markets, and client flow and solutions businesses," but gave no further details.

"In the future, the Investment Bank will be less complex, carry less risk and use less capital to produce reliable returns and contribute more optimally to UBS's overall objectives," Villiger said.

UBS had already said in August it would axe 3,500 more jobs to shave 2 billion Swiss francs off annual costs, with almost half of those cuts coming from the investment bank, which had grown to almost 18,000 staff from 16,500 a year ago.

Clients pulled nearly 400 billion Swiss francs ($442 billion) -- almost 20 percent of total client assets -- from UBS after the bank was battered in the financial crisis as well as a prolonged dispute with the U.S. tax authorities and posted the biggest annual corporate loss in Swiss history.

Villiger said Gruebel had achieved an "impressive turnaround and strengthened UBS fundamentally." But other private banks are now circling again to nab clients worried about reputational risk in the wake of the rogue trader affair.

UBS's largest shareholder, Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, met the bank's management earlier in the week and in a rare public statement expressed its disappointment. It urged them to take firm action to restore confidence and wanted details of how the bank would tighten risk controls.

The board said it would continue to look for a permanent successor to Gruebel. Villiger thanked Ermotti for standing in on an interim basis, adding: "With his extensive industry experience and together with the executive leadership team he will continue to implement UBS"s strategic alignment."

Ermotti has worked in all UBS's core business areas: as UniCredit deputy CEO he had responsibility for corporate and investment banking as well as private banking and at Merrill Lynch he led equity markets activities globally.

UBS's board meeting, one of four regular ones per year, had originally been due to end on Friday ahead of the UBS-sponsored Singapore Formula One motor racing Grand Prix on Sunday, when executives will be trying to reassure big clients.

In 2007, former UBS CEO Peter Wuffli was ousted unceremoniously at a board meeting in Spain to coincide with the America's Cup yachting event there, in which UBS was sponsoring a team.

The loss allegedly caused by Adoboli in unauthorized trades compares to the 4.9 billion euros ($6.6 billion) lost by rogue trader Jerome Kerviel at Societe Generale three years ago, an event that prompted calls for tighter rules and felled that bank's then-chairman and CEO Daniel Bouton.

Are kids getting enough knowledge in school ... - Education Reference

Question by Kennedi: Are kids getting enough knowledge in school for the outside world?
kids are?nt using their knowledge than much outside rather inside at school!!!!

Best answer:

Answer by Happy Feet
Nope, in biology we dont need to know certain things like what are bacterias long names,
And about certain DNA things i dont want to know that ,
Along with chemicals and atoms and all that i honestly don?t need to know it.
All we need to know is what combinations are deadly and should NOT be messed around with,

For example bleach and ammonium = VERY bad mix
SHOULD NOT BE MIXED together, its deadly.

But things like what type of atoms metals have
We DON?T NEED to know?.

We should learn things like how to start a fire with just sticks and rocks,
How to clean water,
through filtration, and how you filtrated ,
then to boil it before its safe to drink.
A long with if your in the woods and you need to survive,
what plants are good to eat,
how to stay warm
what we should have,
How to tell north from south, how to read a compass,

Theres MANY things we should be learning but they don?t teach it at school.
English and writing, is something we need to communicate in america,
Math is something good to know especially since we buy food, and some people own bussiness.

What do you think? Answer below!

Breast Cancer: The Most Important Cancer? (Angry Rant) | Women ...

Why is Breast Cancer prioritized over every other type of cancer? What happened to kidney, lung, prostate, blader, mouth, throat, and brain cancer? Where is the no awareness at all for any other type of cancer? The entire world knows what Breast Cancer is, yet the same doesn?t apply for every other cancer. Stop these idiotic Breast Cancer marches, and start marching for ALL cancers. Not just the one that effects you?.because cancer effects all of us, directly or indirectly, yourself or family members. For some reason women are a better marketing tool, as they?ve got Breast Cancer to be one of the most noticed and popularized diseases. Pink ribbons, marches, groups, websites, organizations, clothes, sports, social media, tv, everywhere! It?s EVERYWHERE! But when it comes to Prostate cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer?..not important at all. No months, no ribbons, no groups, never on the media, never any marches, NOTHING. Please explain to me why we are socially accepting this? Isn?t it morally wrong to put Breast Cancer on a higher standard then other cancers despite it being relatively easy to cure -compared- to Brain tumors, liver cancer, getting a kidney took out. Come on?..let?s be real here. More women have been killed by lung cancer then they have breast cancer, yet there is no months or groups or any attention payed to it. Prostate cancer is probably a top-killer for men?.no attention is payed to it. None at all. Cancer Awareness Month, Rainbow Ribbon, Cancer ?

ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5

Many antivirus vendors have adopted a yearly update model, but ESET doesn't swing with that crowd. I reviewed ESET's version 4 in March of 2009, and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5 ($39.99, direct; $59.99 for three licenses) has just now turned up. This version hasn't changed much in appearance. ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5?s user interface exposes just the information and controls you're likely to need, hiding more complex settings under advanced setup.

During installation you must actively choose whether to enable or disable detection of "potentially unwanted applications." There's no default; you must choose one or the other. Naturally I enabled this feature for testing.

ESET's activation system is a bit awkward. It demands full contact information including physical mail address. Once you've entered a three-license key, you can't use that key again to protect two other PCs. Rather, you must locate the randomly-generated username and password emailed to you after that initial activation and use those for the other two.

Install Trouble, Scan Trouble
Getting ESET installed on my twelve malware-infested test systems was a bit of a challenge. On over half the systems the real-time protection module requested a reboot to finish cleaning up an active threat immediately after installation.

That initial reboot is no problem in itself, but one of those systems became unresponsive after rebooting. I got it working again by using Task Manager to kill and restart Windows Explorer. At that point a message from ESET appeared warning that Explorer was attempting to access a virus and requesting another reboot. I took this as a possible clue that ESET caused the hangup by suspending Windows Explorer, though I couldn't prove it.

I went around this circle five or six times, with a different file each time, before giving up. Fortunately scanning in Safe Mode solved the problem. Another system stuck in a similar fashion, and the icons vanished from ESET's display. Once again a Safe Mode scan solved the problem.

On a third system ESET asked for a reboot to finish wiping out a particular threat. After reboot it did the exact same thing again and again, without end. Something similar happened in my testing of Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+ 2012 ($39.95 direct, 2.5 stars).

Tech support instructed me to gather logs and use ESET's built-in SysInspector tool. After evaluating the logs they supplied a script for a third-party tool called The Avenger. The script successfully wiped out this persistent threat, but I would have been more impressed had an in-house tool accomplished that feat.

Good Malware Cleanup
With those problems out of the way, testing went quickly. An in-depth scan of the hard drive and operating memory on my standard clean test system finished in 13 minutes. That's faster than Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free 1.51 (Free, 4 stars) (14 minutes) and AVG Anti-Virus Free 2012 (Free, 4 stars) (16 minutes). However, a repeat scan with AVG took less than two minutes.

On finishing a scan, ESET reports statistics on what it did. You can click a link for the full scan log, but most users will find it much too detailed. I'd prefer a simple list of threats found, with the individual file and Registry traces hidden by default.

ESET detect 88 percent of the threats, the same as AVG, and scored 6.5 points for malware removal, also the same as AVG. Norton AntiVirus 2012 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars) had a slightly lower detection rate, but better cleanup earned it the top removal score of 7.1 points.

Like many of the current antivirus products, ESET detected 100 percent of the scareware (rogue antivirus) samples and scored 9.5 points for scareware removal. Norton and Malwarebytes both managed a perfect 10 on the scareware test.

Quite a few products tested with the current sample set also detected 100 percent of the threats that use rootkit technology. ESET detected 88 percent and scored a so-so 5.3 points for rootkit removal. For an explanation of how I boil down a product's behavior into a malware removal score see How We Test Malware Removal.

Upgrade Your House, Get A New Garage | Free Fast Approval ...

The garage, which traditionally has been one of the most unfinished and disorganized space, is now treated as the hot space of today. This trend has been gaining momentum since the past twenty years, all thanks to the peoples? want of a room that will serve as a multi purpose space and will also be the reason for the envy of the people around. This is the same mentality that makes the garage a place for tool and equipment storage, sports gear, home projects, and hobbies.

The garage tops the list of the current hot spots and the people are willing to spend any amount of money to make it look the best according to the president of the wall storage system manufacturer. The garage must be flexible as the extra car bays quite often serve as workshops and storage areas. In today?s world, people want their garages to be as efficient as their kitchens.

The purchasers of the higher scale want their garages to be just perfect. He wants to better utilize the space that?s available. Nowadays, in order to make the most of the unused space whilst adding style and utility, homeowner?s are turning their attention towards organization fixtures and storage accessories to increase the value of their houses.

Some manufacturers have recently started manufacturing specifically designed modular organization systems that withstand the fluctuations in temperature in the garage, the weight of equipment and the tools and the caustic chemicals used in the household. To fulfill the customer?s changing storage needs, the garage organizations systems offer a total solution which includes a vast range of hooks, shelves, brackets, cabinets etc. Being made from different PVC formulations the walls can endure the extreme heat and cold.

They can be easily applied on drywall or even directly to the framing studs after you fix them together with the use of a tongue and groove locking system. Perforated steel panels might be used too however the main idea of behind all systems is to maintain flexibility.

The attractiveness of these systems is due to their flexibility. The various components can be moved and supplemented at will. Durable work surfaces, lighting, and flooring are also part of most systems.

A lot of homeowners wants a high end look which enhances the other products in their homes, though the garage organization is functional by all means. There are casters in stainless for floor cabinets, which will give the garage the look of a gleam of a pro shop.

Most of the home owners spend money on their garage organization, after moving into new homes. The builder is able to recover the money that is spent at the home improvement center by selling them a custom installed system during design and construction while providing a valuable amenity. A few hundred dollars to a grand $10,000 is what you?ll have to pay for a complete garage organization system. The house owners might spend a little on the do-it-yourself organization systems, a solution, which is coordinated and integrated and is all set to store the tools and equipments of the buyer as soon as they shift to their new house is to the most of them, beyond value. Frequently the value of the organization is part of the mortgage.

Pour some sugar on me?. | Coastal Health and Fitness Blog

On second thought, don?t do that. I?m not sure what Def Leppard was singing about with these lyrics, but it probably wasn?t a nutritional statement.

I thought about this song a few days ago as I tried to talk a patient out of his newly started diet. Firstly, I do not like ?diets?. I like people to embrace a manner of eating and live that way forever. Short term changes to one?s eating habits yield short term results. Diets that restrict you to certain foods or prohibit other foods almost always end in failure. Lifestyle modifications, however, are much more likely to succeed because the changes are created with the goal of them lasting a lifetime (duh!).

Back to the patient and his onerous new diet plan. With the goal of losing 20 pounds to become a better cyclist and paddler, he told me that his trainer gave him a plan that included 3-5 protein shakes throughout the day, prohibited all fruits and grains, prohibited alcohol and dairy, prohibited beef and pork and required constant snacking (mostly hard boiled eggs with broccoli, protein shakes and sliced turkey breast with quinoa).

My first question: do you have a personal or family history of kidney disease? Such high protein intake could and would tax the abilities of a compromised kidney to function. He did not, so no big problem there.

Second question: why so much protein? He told me that he was trying to keep his blood sugar low and supply his muscles with the needed material to be big and lean.

Third question: so, is that why you?re not eating fruit? Yes, he replied, the glycemic index of fruits, breads and pastas are too high and are responsible for his extra weight that he had not been able to shed.

With this answer, I realized the need to talk with this patient for several minutes and help him to understand some basic nutritional premises. First, with regards to body weight and unwanted/extra body fat, the old saying holds true: a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. Yes, different food types can have the effect of satiating or increasing hunger. But at the end of the day, to lose weight calories ?in? must be less that calories ?out?. In other words, burn more energy than you consume. This can be accomplished by burning more, consuming less, or both.

Remember the riddle you learned in grade school: what weighs more, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers? Transfer that riddle over to food: what has more calories, 500 calories of bagels or 500 calories of broccoli? Yes they are both very different foods with different affects on the body, but from a shear caloric standpoint, they are the same.

So, back to my patient. Next question: what is the rationale for eliminating all fruits? His answer: fruits have a high glycemic index which means that they contain a lot of sugars which means that they trigger insulin to store sugar as body fat. This is a pretty easy concept to explain, so I set to work.

There is a nutritional value called the glycemic index. It was established 30+ years ago to help diabetics find foods that would not cause their blood sugar to ?spike? out of control. Originally, it was based upon the blood sugar response to consuming 50g of white bread (now it is based upon pure glucose). All foods are compared as a percentage of that number. So, 50g of glucose yields a score of 100, while 50g of baked potato yields a score of 85 and 50g of peanuts yields a score of 15. A higher score means more grams of simple carbohydrates in that 50g serving and therefore a greater potential to ?spike? blood sugar.

Is he right then to avoid all high glycemic foods? No! There is another food measurement of which he (and most likely his trainer, as well) was unaware: glycemic load. The glycemic load quantifies how much simple carbohydrate comes from a serving of a given food. It is determined by this equation:

(Glycemic index X Number of carbs in the serving of food) / 100

Lets see the glycemic load in action:

Watermelon has a glycemic index of 72 (an index > 70 is considered ?high?). 1 cup of watermelon contains 11g of carbohydrates: (72 x 11) /100 = 8 (less than 10 is ?low?, 11-19 is ?medium? and >20 is ?high?).

Now look at a soda. A typical12 oz. soda has a glycemic index of 59. Note that this number is LOWER than the index value for watermelon. Enter the glycemic load: because a typical soda has 39g of carbohydrates, the load is: (59 x 39) /100 = 23.

If this still isn?t making sense, consider it this way. Imagine 2 rivers, both flowing at the same rate of 3 miles per hour. River A is 6 inches deep and 12 inches wide. River B is 10 feet deep and 50 feet wide. They are both traveling at the same speed, but which is moving more water? The river?s speed is the glycemic index, while the force of the river (its speed combined with its size) is the glycemic load. Which river has greater force?

Once again, back to my patient. At this point I have hopefully convinced him that carrots, pears and bananas are not the evil creation of a malignant being who hopes us all to be obese. I now must convince him of the value of carbohydrates. This part is a little tougher.

Typically, it is recommended that endurance athletes consume 6-10g of carbs per kilo of body weight. This range is pretty broad, covering everything from the 40/30/30 diet to Barry Sear?s Zone diet to Nancy Clark?s endurance athlete diets. While there are several choices for athletes such as my patient, the constant for each of these is the need for carbs. I recommended that he drop the protein shakes entirely, swapping them for snacks consisting of walnuts with apples, sliced turkey with cherries or quinoa with raisins. I further recommended that he allow whole, unprocessed grains into his diet. The bleached, white stuff should be avoided but the whole grains are both good for him and serve as a great source of carbs, his muscle?s primary fuel source.

My hope is that in opening my patient to a simpler world of nutrition, he will be able to create a meal plan that meets his goals and his desires. If he is able to rely upon whole, unprocessed foods, enjoy the ?variety is the spice of life? motto and embrace moderation of all things good and ?bad?, he should do great with his new lifestyle. And if he does not, I?ll give him a choice: go see a registered dietician or I?ll make him listen to Def Leppard!

How To Write Travel Articles For Article Marketing | Articleava - Your ...

There are lots of travel website owners who write travel articles for article marketing, many of whom do not give themselves the best shot at successful results. In this article I will explain why some travel writers let themselves down and how I believe they can improve their results.

The Nitty Gritty

First of all article marketers submit articles to article directories as part of their website promotions ? that and much of what I?m saying here applies for any niche. Ideally article marketers are working towards the following:

- Long term backlinks pointing to their sites
- Viral effect of articles being re-published on authority sites and ezines
- Click throughs on those links
- Establish themselves as an authority in their niche
- Credibility in the eyes of readers

The first 3 are about getting more traffic to your sites, the last 3 are about benefiting from the traffic. Article marketers will not benefit from their work if they produce:

- Poorly written articles
- Show a lack of first hand knowledge
- Ruin their credibility by misleading and disappointing readers

It?s all common sense but not every writer gets it. In order to explain more I will use some potential scenarios.

Information Searches

Jess and Mick have booked a cheap flight on the Internet to the Canary Islands. As they need accommodation it?s only natural that they do a search for the type of accommodation that they want. They use ?Canary Island holiday property rentals? in their first search and are pleased to see an article titled ?Canary Island Holiday Property Rentals? at the top of the search results.

Disappointment hits them when they find that the article is about the Canary Islands in general and has nothing to do with holiday property rentals except for a link in the resource box. The author has lost credibility because their title is misleading and the only links that are likely to be clicked on are the Google ads that you generally find on the article directory pages or more likely Jess and Mick click away and continue their search.

They finally find the information that they really want and accommodations sorted out they now want information about hiring a car. Their search is Canary Islands car hire, the top link is an article titled ?Canary Islands Car Hire?. Imagine how annoyed Jess and Mick feel to find yet another general article about the Canary Islands and the only thing concerning car hire is a link in the author bio ? goodbye credibility, article and click throughs!

Publisher Searches

Mathew is building a website about the Caribbean. He has some of his own material but decides to visit an article directory and find some content to help build his site faster. He finds a really great article about visiting Jamaica and would love to use it but the title ?Cheap Flights To The Caribbean? is a problem. Yes you?ve guessed right ? the only reference to cheap flights is in the author bio. Mathew decides against using the article on his website because he has ethics and does not want to mislead his site visitors.

He then spots an article titled ?Fabulous Jamaica Resort Review?. Mathew expects a genuine review from somebody who has visited the resort, but he doesn?t get that. Instead there is a brochure like article extolling the virtues of a hotel or all inclusive resort that just happens to be linked to in the author bio ? and an article that shows no indication of the author ever setting foot on the beautiful island of Jamaica. There is also a sentence recommending a website for more information within the article body and that website just happens to belong to the author ? goodbye credibility.

Reality Check

With these scenarios the authors have thought that they were being clever and used the best keywords and phrases in the titles for what they are promoting in the author bio. Fair enough if the article content matches the titles and key phrases ? shooting yourself in the foot article marketing if it doesn?t.

If you promise a review of a resort you should deliver just that and not something that can be found on any travel brochure or travel site. A review should be an author?s opinion written from experience and nothing less. Recommending your own websites in the article body not only spoils an article but is also a credibility hit.

If your misleading article is accepted on article directories do you want to benefit from the viral effect of your article being published on other websites and ezines? Would you want content on your website or ezine that is misleading or pure unpaid for advertising? I know that I wouldn?t.

Any good and ethical sales person, and that includes Internet marketers know that to do well you need to build up trust with your prospective customers. You want your articles to work for you so start thinking about them from the point of view of a reader or publisher and you won?t go far wrong.

The travel niche is huge and nowadays many travellers search the Internet for information before they book their dream holidays. The majority of travellers know nothing about Internet marketing, article marketing or key phrases. All they know is what they see ??? that they are being misled. Would you click on a link and buy from an author or seller who is misleading you?
