President Obama on Trayvon Martin: ?If I Had a Son, He Would Look Like Trayvon?

president obama trayvon martin

President Barack Obama has spoken up about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, and while the Commander in Chief did not pledge any particular action, he did offer acknowledgements to the murdered teen?s family that the case had not been handled very well. (Obama also noted that since the Attorney General reports to him, he was required to be cautious in any statements he made about the investigation.)

The Trayvon Martin case has to be a bit tough to navigate for America?s first black president- on one hand, as expected, Obama might identify more heavily with the grieving family of Martin than many white Americans. (And let?s not gloss over the fact that a lot of covert racism has become overt racism since the president took office.)

On the other, when Obama even hints at race, his critics jump all over him and accuse the president of ?reverse racism? or any other number of silly allegations that have probably led to some oversensitivity on his part overall. To wit, if Obama did?promise action on Trayvon Martin?s murder, the GOP outrage machine would go into overdrive and a million unsolved murders of white people would be held up as evidence that Barack Obama does not care about white people. So the president is probably left in the uncomfortable position of having to speak very carefully on Trayvon Martin- legality notwithstanding- when it is likely he is just as horrified and outraged as the rest of us about the continuing lack of justice in the case.

Obama hinted at patience- a common refrain from authorities in the wake of the shooting and one that many find frustrating, as it?s not often that civilians can shoot unarmed civilians on suburban streetcorners and remain free while the crime is investigated. But the president did express a degree of sadness over the killing, saying:

?When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids??I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative to investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together ? federal, state and local ? to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.?

Obama continued in a lawyerly fashion:

?I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen? And that means we examine the laws, the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident.?

Lastly, the president had a message for Martin?s grieving mom and dad, saying:

?But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin: If I had a son he?d look like Trayvon. And I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are gonna take this with the seriousness it deserves and that we?re going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.?

While it?s tempting to think that President Obama can rush in and swiftly bring down the hammer of justice in the Martin case, realistically, it seems a resolution might be a long time coming. Do you think that progress in the Trayvon Martin case is imminent, or will George Zimmerman continue to not be called to account for his crimes? (Below, a video of Barack Obama?s statement this morning on Trayvon Martin.)

Nature experiences and empathy?see the March issues of journals ...

Cover of Science and Children, NSTA journalBoth the NSTA journal Science and Children, and the NAEYC journal Young Children, were especially riveting this month, March of 2012. I quickly look through the journals to get a feel for the issue, and then put them in my reading bag or pile, unless I happen to be sitting down to the rare quiet meal by myself?then I begin to read from cover to cover. This month I?ve read them little by little and here are a few thoughts. Please get these journals and read them yourselves, and then comment below to share your thoughts.

Teacher and child closely examine a flower. In the Early Years column I suggest that a water source such as a birdbath can attract animals close enough to the school to observe, and collect data by drawing. On a walking fieldtrip today just around the playground and school building my preschoolers saw many signs of spring, including flowering paw-paw and Bradford pear trees, forsythia flowers, Cabbage White butterflies, and a starling carrying pine needles from the big tree up to a hole in a pipe to build a nest. Nature is waiting for us just outside the door.

The Bradford pear trees in my community are in full bloom this week?beautiful when in a still picture and on a still afternoon but troublesome in the real world, especially on a windy day or in a heavy snowfall when their limbs are likely to break, or when they spread into a wild natural area. Read about how teachers developed the role-play to engage fifth-grade students in understanding scientific inquiry, ecosystems, diversity, and risks and benefits in Banishing Bradford Pears?by Cynthia Deaton and Michelle Cook. Then think of an environmental problem that is within the control of your younger?students, and role-play on how to effect change. The problems that preschool age children can fix are ones we are familiar with: the sandbox is almost empty because the sand has been carried to other parts of the school yard, a classroom toy is missing parts because they were not put away when last used, the paper towel dispenser has run out because people are using two and three towels when one would be enough, or the plants in the garden are wilted because no one has watered them.

Establishing the habit of stewardship, or taking care of the environment, can start before appreciation of why this is important takes root. Even though we model good manners and environmental stewardship, our students may not copy our behavior so we can provide experiences that highlight how important these behaviors are. There will always be a range of expression of empathy in a class but by requiring ?pleases? and ?thank-yous? we set expectations for children as they grow. When ?we all clean up to make our classroom a pleasing place? is a community expectation, it becomes a habit that we hope will carry over into the larger world. (Do you have a favorite clean-up song or signal for your classroom?)

I agree with what David Sobel says in his 2008 Focus the Nation presentation at Antioch University, Global Climate Change Meets Ecophobia. He said, ?My desire is to approach this from a perspective that maximizes hope. If we lead with all the tragic implications of climate change, then we risk scaring children into despair. In Beyond Ecophobia I suggested, ?No (environmental) tragedies before fourth grade.?? You can watch this presentation online at http://www.antiochne.edu/focusthenation/ecophobia_sobel.cfm

What will make children become environmental stewards? I think that the caring community described in the Young Children article, ?One Mommy Breast and One Daddy Breast: Encountering Illness as Emergent Curriculum? is what will help young children develop?a sense of responsibility for others and develop their ability to take action.?In the article, a?teacher who was diagnosed with breast cancer said this about how she would tell the children she worked with about her illness and the treatment process she would be going through.? ??We have dealt with difficult topics before?a knee surgery, and the death of a family pet. I believe children are capable, ready to engage, to learn. Gandini?s quote on the image of children is the one I hold on to:

All children have preparedness, potential, curiosity, and interest in constructing their learning; in engaging in social interactions and negotiating everything that the environment brings them. (Gandini, L. 1993. ?The Fundamentals of the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education,? Young Children 49 (1): 4-8)

If you believe this, it?s a no-brainer that cancer is an illness that would be discussed, documented, researched, and experienced in the classroom.?

The teacher did not exclude the children from taking the journey with her but she did not begin by describing the seriousness of her illness. The children responded with actions which were within their power?with matter-of-fact questions and discussion, making hats and hair for the teacher and wearing headscarves until they were able to accept her baldness caused by chemotherapy. This teacher and the other authors ask, ?Does it protect the children to keep them apart from it [knowledge of serious illness]? Or does it isolate and remove children?s power to act?? They also said ?It is not that adults would ask the children to do so [take on the responsibility of supporting an ill teacher], but that their empathy and care contributed in an essential way to the healing of others.?

Young child stomping in a rain puddle.Sobel reports that involvement with local nature experiences is strongly tied to environmental stewardship. The March 2012 issue of Science and Children focuses on ways to get teachers and students outside to have those direct experiences with nature. By supporting children?s development of empathy and their ability to act, as shown in the Young Children article, and providing direct experiences as part of the local nature, teachers can foster children?s love of the environment and stewardship actions appropriate to their age and ability.

World News - Finally, UN reaches agreement over 'extremely ...

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The U.N. Security Council, including Russia, agreed on Wednesday to a statement endorsing efforts by Kofi Annan to end the Syrian uprising, providing a rare moment of global unity in the face of the year-long crisis.

The statement, which threatens Syria with unspecified "further steps" if it fails to comply with a six-point peace plan drawn up by Annan, will be formally adopted in New York later in the day, diplomats said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday praised the move as a "positive step".

"To President Assad and his regime we say, along with the rest of the international community: take this path, commit to it, or face increasing pressure and isolation," Clinton told reporters after a meeting with Afghanistan's foreign minister.

Although the original Western-drafted statement had to be diluted at Russia's demand, editing out any specific ultimatums, the fact that all major powers signed up to the proposal represented a blow to President Bashar Assad, who is fighting for his survival.

Activist: Assad's deadly crackdown turning peaceful Syrians into terrorists

At least 8,000 people have died in the revolt, according to U.N. figures, with the violence intensifying in recent weeks as pro-government forces bombard rebel towns and villages, looking to sweep their lightly armed opponents out of their strongholds.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday that the crisis was alarming and had "massive repercussions" for the entire world.

"We do not know how events will unfold. But we do know that we all have a responsibility to work for a resolution of this profound and extremely dangerous crisis," Ban said in a speech in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

Syria lies in a pivotal position at the heart of a web of regional conflicts in the Middle East, comprising a mix of faiths, sects and ethnic groups, and diplomats fear the rebellion is degenerating into a full-blown civil war.

Assad's forces have chalked up a string of gains as they turned their firepower on areas held by rebels, but the fighting shows no sign of abating and analysts expect the insurgents to change their tactics and adopt guerrilla warfare.

Opposition activists said the army used tanks, artillery and anti-aircraft guns on the Damascus suburbs of Harasta and Irbin early Wednesday, which were retaken from rebels two months ago but have seen renewed insurgency in recent days.

From university campus to torture chamber: A Syrian refugee's fight for freedom

Elsewhere, the army fired mortars into the Khalidiya district of Homs, while artillery targeted the rebel town of Rastan, north of Homs city, in central Syria. Video also showed shelling of the ancient Apamea castle at Qalat Mudiq, near Hama.

Reports from Syria cannot be independently verified because officials have barred access to rights groups and journalists.

Russia and China have vetoed two previous U.N. draft resolutions that would have condemned Damascus and have resisted calls from Western and Arab states for Assad to stand down.

But faced by growing global outrage at the bloodshed, the two countries agreed to a so-called "presidential statement", which are generally non-binding documents that nonetheless require unanimous support in the Security Council.

Speaking after the UN agreement was reached, Britain's Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said: ?I strongly welcome the Security Council?s full and unanimous support for the work of Kofi Annan as joint UN-Arab League envoy, expressed in today?s Presidential statement.

"I urge the Syrian authorities to take this chance to stop the bloodshed and show their commitment to implementing Kofi Annan?s six point plan, including by immediately pulling back the military from in and around population centers."

Game Group in administration as business fails

LONDON (AP) ? Game Group, the troubled retailer of electronic games and player platforms, said Wednesday it will appoint an administrator after failing to keep the business afloat at a time when purchases are increasingly being made online.

Game earlier had suspended trading in its shares after key suppliers withdrew support. Shares closed at 2.39 pence Tuesday on the London Stock Exchange, having fallen from 62 pence a year ago.

"The board has concluded that its discussions with all stakeholders and other parties have not made sufficient progress in the time available to offer a realistic prospect for a solvent solution for the business," the company said when announcing its intention to take shelter in administration.

"In the short term the board's intention is that the business will continue to trade and discussions with lenders and third parties will continue under the protection of the interim moratorium."

Administration protects Game, which faces a large quarterly rent bill this month, from creditors during a period of reorganization.

Game, which is burdened with 100 million pounds ($160 million) in debt, is reportedly looking at plans to close half of its 610 British stores. The private equity group OpCapita had tabled an offer to take over Game and its debts, the FT said.

Game announced last month that Electronic Arts Ltd. had refused to supply the company with Mass Effect 3, expected to be a big-selling game.

Last week, Game said it was talking to suppliers and lenders in pursuit of agreements which would allow the business to continue. It said it was unable to get stock from several suppliers.

In the eight weeks to Jan. 7, covering the key Christmas period, Game's sales in stores which were open at least a year were down more than 15 percent in Britain and down nearly that much in its other European shops.

In the six months ending July 31, Game reported a net loss of 37.2 million pounds ($59.1 million) on revenue of 559 million pounds. A year earlier, Game's net loss was 15.4 million pounds.

Based in Basingstoke, England, Game has 1,300 stores trading under the Game and Gamestation brands including outlets in France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Australia.

The takeover of Gamestation and its 217 U.K. stores in 2007 left Game with a bloated portfolio of shops, with Game and Gamestation stores competing in some markets.
